about

'Hilary' was the first Encyclopedia music to be released in 3 years. I wrote it on the train home from my last show playing in the band Tellison, last October. It's backed with a full rock band version of an older song called 'Get A Drummer'. We released an acoustic version some while ago as the B-side to the 'Emily' single. You'll find it to rock much harder than the last time, although you won't be surprised since the last time it didn't really rock at all. We recorded these songs in my garage with our friend Ben Turner.

The single was released as a limited 7" vinyl single and lossless download (right here) on Monday 27th July. Check it.

Track Name: Hilary
Hilary, I'm still alive despite the heavy artillery
That took out my heart metaphorically
At Club NME when our eyes did meet
And I know I have a tendancy to get carried away in the moment
And make something out of nothing
Oh, when I've been drinking Burrow Hill most of the week

But the boys in the band are fed up with me talking about it
And they tell me that I should shut up or do something about it
And I tell them I will 'cos I wish that I would but I doubt it

She comes from Canada, O' Canada, North America
And I'm an embarrassment, she comes from Canada
North America

Seriously, there's a lot of stuff I like about Canada
Joel Plaskett, Sixty Stories, Josh Waganaar
And though I've never been
Seems like a pretty good place to me
So it's a bit of a mystery that I should meet someone so darned interesting
At a party by an illiterate, corporate magazine
Part of London's cool scene I will never be

But the boys play the game 'cos their band's freakin' great they've gotta make it pay
And my head says the same but my heart's in a totally different place
And I cannot believe I've mentioned NME in one of my songs, twice

She comes from Canada, O' Canada, North America
And I'm an embarrassment, she comes from Canada, North America
Northern Hemisphere, like us, but still so far away from here
She comes from Canada, O' Canada, North America
Track Name: Get A Drummer
I've been trying to eat more healthy like
I've been cooking stir fry
You know it's harder to write these heart breakers when you're happy on the inside
We've been trying to look my angry
Like we've had such a hard life
We only wanna be taken more seriously

We had so many friends before
But we don't make the effort anymore

We're waiting for a better offer
When the right one comes take it slow
Watch it go
Just waiting for a better offer
'Til we're better off alone

I was young but I'm only getting older
I was fit but I'm only getting fatter
I was good but I'm only getting badder and badder
Now I'm bad, you know it, I'm bad

And we had so much fun before
But now we're bored

We're waiting for a better offer
When the right one comes take it slow
Watch it go
Just waiting for a better offer
'Til we're better of alone

We're never gonna get an offer 'til we get a drummer
And that's a bummer 'cos we're never gonna get a drummer
Just to get an offer

When the right one comes take it slow
Watch it go
Just waiting for a better offer
'Til we're better off alone, better off alone
Track Name: Hello
What am I wanna be when I grow up?
I'll say I'm gonna write songs and sing them and stuff
And if they're like, "Oh, music business huh? That's tough
Ever thought about university?"

I'll be like, hello, ever thought about shutting the hell up?
Ever thought that there might be more than just the same route you took?
Hello, don't you get it? Give me a little bit of credit

I just read a review of your new CD in my magazine
It told me you sound like Hello-goodbye
And I mean, you must do right?
Cos you've got synthesizers and hand claps and stuff like that
And I'm like yeah whatever

Hello, ever thought about shutting the hell up?
Ever thought that the words you took from that book might be misinformed junk?
Hello? Oh forget it

See I've got all this aggression building up
It's like a red hot fire whizzing round in my gut
And I'm kind've scared one day it might go pop
I might tell everyone how I really feel

And they'll be like, hello, ever thought about shutting the hell up?
I used to think that you were alright when you were happy all the time but now it's like, nah

Hello, ever thought about shutting the hell up?
Ever thought that there might be more than just the same route you took?
Hello, don't you get it? Give me a little bit of credit
